Boxwoods (Buxus) have been a staple in formal gardens and landscapes for centuries, and for good reason. These versatile evergreen shrubs offer a timeless elegance, versatility, and resilience that make them a perfect choice for Connecticut properties. At Landscaper Luke, we’re passionate about providing high-quality boxwood varieties and expert installation services to help you create stunning hedges, borders, and topiaries that will enhance your landscape for years to come.
The Allure of Boxwoods
Boxwoods possess a unique combination of features that make them a beloved choice for landscapers and homeowners alike:
- Classic Beauty: Their dense, compact growth habit and small, glossy leaves create a formal, manicured look that complements both traditional and contemporary landscape designs.
- Versatility: Boxwoods can be pruned and shaped into a variety of forms, from low hedges and borders to intricate topiaries and sculptures.
- Evergreen Foliage: Unlike deciduous shrubs that lose their leaves in the fall, boxwoods provide year-round color and structure, adding visual interest to your landscape even during the winter months.
- Adaptability: Boxwoods tolerate a wide range of soil types and light conditions, making them suitable for various planting locations.
- Longevity: With proper care, boxwoods can live for decades, becoming cherished features in your landscape.
- Deer Resistance: Their strong scent and bitter taste deter deer browsing, protecting your investment and ensuring your boxwoods remain beautiful.
Popular Boxwood Varieties
At Landscaper Luke, we offer a selection of popular boxwood varieties known for their beauty and performance in Connecticut:
- English Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens): A classic choice with dense, dark green foliage and a compact growth habit. It's ideal for formal hedges, topiaries, and foundation plantings.
- American Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa'): A dwarf variety with smaller leaves and a slower growth rate, perfect for low hedges, borders, and edging.
- Green Mountain Boxwood (Buxus 'Green Mountain'): A pyramidal-shaped boxwood with a naturally upright growth habit, making it ideal for vertical accents and privacy screens.
- Wintergreen Boxwood (Buxus microphylla var. koreana): A cold-hardy variety with excellent winter color retention, ensuring your landscape remains vibrant even during the coldest months.
- Littleleaf Boxwood (Buxus microphylla): A compact, rounded shrub with small leaves, ideal for low hedges, mass plantings, and container gardens.

- Low Borders & Edging: Use boxwoods to create neat and tidy borders around flower beds, walkways, or patios.
- Topiaries & Sculptures: With careful pruning and shaping, boxwoods can be transformed into stunning topiaries, adding a touch of artistry and sophistication to your landscape.

- Container Gardens: Their compact growth habit makes boxwoods ideal for container gardens, adding greenery and structure to patios, balconies, and entryways.
Planting & Care Tips
While boxwoods are relatively low-maintenance, proper planting and care are essential for optimal growth and longevity:
- Sunlight: Plant in full sun to partial shade.
- Soil: They prefer well-drained, fertile soil.
- Watering: Water regularly during the first year after planting, especially during dry periods. Once established, they are moderately drought-tolerant.
- Fertilization: Fertilize annually in the spring with a balanced fertilizer formulated for evergreen shrubs.
